THE STORY GRIDDue to multiple requests, here is a photo of the very same infographic I shared with my business partner and friend Steven Pressfield. Steve, whom I’ve edited for decades, encouraged me to write my upcoming book The Story Grid and explain exactly what all the chicken scratch means. We published The Story Grid ourselves, under our small publishing company Black Irish Books.
Here is my system of classifying the myriad choices of Genre, which I’ve culled from numerous sources, including Aristotle, Norman Friedman, George Polti and innumerable others over the past two decades. However, I am most indebted to my clients Robert McKee and Bassim El-Wakil and their incredible series of discussions on Genre that I had the good fortune to hear and absorb. I cannot overstate their influence on my work.
I call my organizational structure The Five Leaf Genre Clover. A writer needs to choose at least one category from each of the five leaves. And yes, we’re creating a far better looking version for the final book. Click the thumbnail to the right to view a larger version online, or download a PDF version
THE FOOLSCAP GLOBAL STORY GRID
Covering the “Macro,” the Foolscap Global Story Grid is one of two documents that you’ll use to create The Story Grid infographic for your work. Or for any Story you’d like to analyze. It gives the writer and editor the 30,000 foot view. While it evolved as an editor’s diagnostic tool rather than from a “create from whole cloth” novelist’s point of view, the novelist can use this single page to map and direct the creation of his/her first draft. And it will serve the writer and editor as a common ground reference to take the work to the next level.
